Our Heart
At Roots, we are committed to loving the world. This is because when God imagined the best thing possible, an earth was formed. God made oceans and soil, a dazzling array of creatures, and created living, complex, blood-filled people, joining them hand-in-hand into community. And so an earth, a complex circling dance of interlaced dependency, was pulled out of some sort of void and sent spinning forward on its beautiful course. This world was God's desire, and it always will be.
Despite this dream, brokenness is thick across the surface of our planet. Nations war. The biosphere groans from pollution. Hurricanes work havoc and money is king. Here in Seattle, our neighborhood contains a dizzying variety of heartbreak. Regardless of one's best efforts, the degree of stress in each of our lives sends us reeling at a pretty consistent rate. Life is difficult.

Roots Church is a community of people dedicated to living healthy lives, full of connection with ourselves and our neighbors, and have found that this happens when life is submitted to God, specifically through the tangible person of Jesus, the Christ, a person we see as the concrete blood-filled image of this invisible God. Through Jesus we see that God loves us. We see the life Jesus lived, how he fought against corrupt religion and self-centeredness, how he tenderly embraced the rejected and disillusioned, and we are transfixed. It is through his servant heart for the world, through his death and resurrection, that we have found life.
Creed of Orthodoxy
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell.
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven
and was seated at the right hand of the Father,
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
